Paarl Research Centre

Paarl Research Centre was established as a dedicated Clinical Trial Unit in 2007. Both full time investigators are general practitioners with extensive experience as investigators. Therapeutic areas include: Cardiovascular outcomes and cardiovascular risk factors including prior coronary, vascular or cerebral events, diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia / hyperlipidemia, smoking cessation and hypertension. Respiratory studies are usually led by the part-time investigator and includes COPD, asthma and allergic rhinitis. The site has also done various pain studies including peripheral neuropathy (HIV and diabetic respectively), gout and osteoarthritis. Many diabetic studies have been completed as well as other endocrinology conditions like obesity and osteoporosis. The site has access to specialist consultants/ sub-investigators for certain conditions like dermatology as well as a specialist physician who performs echocardiography. The local radiologists provide services like X-rays and MRI, should this be required. Currently the site has 3 Study Coordinators and 3 Clinical Trial Assistants to assist with studies. This site is independent, uses central IRBs and is not situated in a hospital setting.
